A McDonald’s is opening in the middle of a small garden. At least, that is what the flag suggests.
Opening Soon places one of the world’s most recognisable commercial symbols in a place where it feels completely out of place: a quiet allotment garden. Nothing else changed. No restaurant was built. No fries were served. Just a flag.
Still, that was enough.
Some people laughed. Others were genuinely annoyed by it. The idea of a McDonald’s appearing there felt strangely believable — and apparently threatening enough to take seriously.
The work plays with that small moment of confusion. With how quickly a familiar symbol can change the way we look at a place, and how strongly we seem to agree on what does and does not belong there.
Luckily, no McDonald’s ever opened.
