People stick chewing gum under chairs, tables and benches all the time.
Gum Works simply takes that habit a little too seriously.
The objects in the series are covered almost entirely in chewing gum, turning something usually hidden, ignored or considered disgusting into the main attraction. A small everyday annoyance is exaggerated until it becomes impossible not to look at.
What starts as something familiar quickly becomes strange. The gum is colourful, tactile and almost decorative, while still carrying the unpleasant association of something that has already been in someone else’s mouth.
By changing the amount rather than the material, Gum Works plays with how easily something ordinary can shift from acceptable to absurd, from disgusting to strangely beautiful.
Apparently, one piece of chewing gum under a chair is normal.
A thousand is a problem.
